Hi Everyone,Its been awhile since I've posted anything here so I hope I'm doing it right.My query is that I have setup a virtual lab to test a domain upgrade and split to seek out the best process and method before moving on to testing with a clone of our actual environment. Here's my setup:. DC01: exo.com (also DNS, DHCP server).

1. Admt Requirements

DC01 had RAS installed and is acting as the router with 3 nic's. One for each subnet and one just for the server IP itself. Subnets: 192.168.5.0 (exo.com) and 192.168.75.0 (pos.exo.com).

POSDC01: pos.exo.com (child domain to exo.com, also has DNS server, where ADMT and SQL are installed.). DC01 had RAS installed and is acting as the router with 3 nic's. Finally have the answer!There were errors in the event viewer pertaining to the UPN/SPN not being unique. I believe this was on the target DC where the errors where shown.Server 2012R2 has a new 'Feature' that doesn't allow UPN/SPN's that are not unique. Even though changing from one domain DNS name 'Win7.exo.com' to another 'Win7.pos.exo.com' doesn't change the servers view that this is a unique UPN/SPN.To work around this I had to use a previous version of MS Server as a DC to perform the migration. This mean's I had to re-setup my test environment because I had already raised the domain functional level to 2012R2.

Feb 25, 2019  The biggest part I am trying to focus on now is the domain migration. I am a bit unsure of the DNS set up, to be honest. I'm familiar with DNS but I am unsure how importing zones from a current DNS server and then cutting the connection will react as well as changing the name of the domain in the process. Here are the steps I have so far.

I used a 2008R2 server but you should be able to use a 2012 Server as well so long as its prior to 2012R2.Here's the new setup I used:. Primary Forest Domain DC 2012R2 (Functional level 2008R2). Child Domain DC 2012R2, and DC2 2008R2 (Functional level 2008R2)When I migrated the computer I set ADMT to use the 2008R2 DC as the target DC. Hi Malikjasarevic,Sorry for the late response I've been super busy with implementing VDI at my site and have had to put my migration plans on hold. So sadly I haven't had time to do a full write up on this and I haven't had any new insights on this process/project.I can tell you that if you have all 2012R2 DC's and you haven't promoted your Forest and domain past 2008R2 Functionality or maybe even 2012 you can install a 2008R2 or 2012 DC for the migration.

If you have upgraded functionality to 2012R2 already then there is a procedure to revert it but I haven't tried it.As a 2nd thought if you can't revert the Functional levels then you could possibly still migrate to a new Forest / Domain that you can create using 2008R2 Functional levels.I've not tested any of this but these are my thoughts on your query. Let me know what you think and what you find. I'll be working on my VDI environment for a few more months before I'm likely to circle back to this Project.Thanks.

KB ID 0001308 Dtd 17/04/17 ProblemOn the homeward stretch now, back in, we migrated service accounts, groups, and users. Now we turn our attention to our machines.Note ADMT 3.2 Only support the migration of Operating Systems up to Windows 7, (that doesn’t mean Windows 8 and Windows 10 wont work, it just means they are not supported). Migrating Windows 8 and 10 throws a lot of security translation errors, because of the way it treats ‘Apps’, so I’d recommend you do a LOT of testing before carrying out a live migration. Solution ADMT Computer Security TranslationMigrating computers is a two-step procedure, you do a security translation on a machine, then you migrate the machine. The security translation adds the security for the user(s) in newdomain.com to all the objects (files, folders, user profiles, and registry hives, etc) that their user account in olddomain.com did.

Like doing the service account migration (above) the plan is to get everything ready to ‘work’ before the machine is migrated.Real World Note: This can take a while, (up to an hour for some machines,) and it’s best done without anyone being logged in (to prevent any profiles, or registry hives being locked). So take time to plan when this is done – rush it and you will have problems, and the very users who are too busy to be interrupted, are the very ones that shout the loudest if there’s a problem post migration. I would (if possible) have a stock of prebuilt machines on the new domain in case there’s any migration dramas, at least then you can get people working quickly.This should be getting familiar by now, accept the defaults.Select your computer(s) Select all the options SELECT ADD Finish.Agent Note: You are about to deploy the ADMT agent, make sure you have followed. This process will be familiar if you carried out the service translation wizard earlier. Run the pre check, and agent deploy.What you will find after translation is all the profiles, and files etc will have the new domain users added alongside the old one with the same rights.ADMT Computer MigrationNow finally to migrate the machines, ADMT Computer Migration Wizard.Select the computers.Select the Target OU Tick everything Add Select the amount of time to wait before rebooting the machine into the new domain.Hang About Haven’t we done some of this? Yes, but because you have done the security translation already it can see the ACLs exist as it goes through and skips creating them.As usual I’m not filtering any attributes I’ll quit if theres a conflict Migration should then complete.Can I migrate Servers With ADMT?Yes, but you need to have a good think about doing so first? For simple file and print servers that should be OK (Obviously back them up first etc).

DONT try and do this with an Exchange server, or any other server that relies on Active directory for its very existence! And wherever possible if you can create clean new servers and migrate your data into them do so!What about Microsoft Exchange and User Mailboxes?I mentioned Exchange briefly on the user migration, Exchange migrations between domains, are possible, depending on your setup it may be easier to export all the mail form the old system and import it into the new one (use the search bar above. I’ve already written a load of stuff about doing this). Admt Requirements

We have a forest migration next weekend and only know am discovering that the ADMT 3.2 tool may not play nicely with those clients. I asked for more testing time early on but the bosses want this done sooner that later.:(I have looked at the ForensIT Profile Migration Wizard tool but am unsure where in the ADMT process I would invoke that. I don’t have very many Win10 clients (maybe 10), but they mostly exist within our upper management sections so I do not want to have too many problems with them if I can avoid it.:)Thanks,Mike.
